Filming- Day 2
Filming Day 2: The Streets of Manchester
By doing this in our narrative and including this setting in some of our scenes, it will enable us to not only show the conventions of an alternative music video but also link some of our lyrics to the setting also.
The conventions we utilised ourselves from the indie genre within music videos were things like dark alley ways, use of smoking and drinking, and general misguided teen behaviour which this filming day definitely enabled us to capture.
Here is just some of our raw footage from Filming day 2:
These scenes shown only show 3 of our narrative characters and other scenes show more; this is partly due to the fact that our availability of actors was limited on this day of filming which does slightly hinder our professionalism of the music video.
However we concluded that it was not a complete failure as we felt we could establish that these 3 characters are the main characters within the narrative and there are a few additional characters present in other scenes, but as the narrative isn't all on the same day and is just a series of days within the teens lives, this could work and wouldn't effect our narrative as much as we believed it would initially.
Some of the limitations we found on this day of filming included weather and lighting. Because we went after school, as it is January, it got dark very quickly, meaning that although the natural low-key lighting wasn't a complete hindrance to the narrative, there was greater difficulty in getting shots we needed as we struggled with the lighting.
Additionally, some of the lyrics in this song connote summer time and how it goes from sunny to dark, so we realised whilst filming that we would need to, in our next filming day, get the characters to wear more summery clothes and do a few scenes of which we could attempt to edit the lighting of to portray the image that it was warmer weather; ideally, we wold do this using a filter alongside with lighting alterations, followed by a cross divide transition to mediate the transition from summer to winter. However, this is going to be addressed during editing.
Overall, we felt that this filming day was a success as we even got extra scenes shot of which we could add into the narrative which were arbitrary and unplanned, for example the rough shot of two narrative characters running through the fountains; we think this is a good shot to begin or end our music video.
