An updated narrative idea!

Narrative Idea: Updated

After giving our initial idea a thorough thought and reflecting on our research, as a group we made some developments to our idea, based off our second focus group feedback also. The more feedback we get off of our target audience the more we are able to adapt and improve our final product. All of our research into the audience and narrative theories, such as the Two Step Flow, has built up to our idea and has inspired us to create a developed narrative structure before we begin the filming of our product.

Storyboard Sketch:

By creating this sketch, although it is only brief, it has simplified our narrative in a way that we are easily able to understand the narrative structure, so that when it comes to filming, we will be able to use this to identify what scene comes next, and perform multiple shot angles and types in each scene.
We plan to film multiple versions (shot types and camera angles) of each scene so that they can all layer on each other and create a montage of multiple scenes but each shot from a different angle so we are able to reflect our camera skills, whilst still maintaining our narrative.

Overall summary of Updated Narrative plan:

Theoretically, I believe that we could apply Levi Strauss's theory of Binary Opposites to our narrative even now after we have developed our narrative idea further and decided on our song choice and developed our research. We want to explore the relationship between rebellious teens against laws and rules set by adults/elders. By doing this, it will enable us to reflect the codes and conventions of an Alternative music video such as smoking, partying, and drinking alcohol as well as reflecting a relationship between youths who are rebellious against the laws and their elders; our narrative will show them 'breaking the rules' in various ways.

We have collectively decided on choosing a song which allows us to portray themes such as young love, rebellion and danger through our music video and the depiction and utilisation of the theory of binary Opposites will allow us to do so effectively.

Additionally, we will utilise further theories such as Barthes' codes; our song choice is full of meaning and imagery which we can make our narrative based around and we can link all of the scenes and images within our music video to fit the artist, genre, lyrics and conventions so that it flows well and the audience can relate to the song even more, as opposed to a narrative which lacks anything to do with the actual meaning of the song.

We want to depict the meaning of the song lyrics through our music video narrative to create a sense of realism to the teenage target audience that we are aiming for so that our artist can be presented effectively and other people can relate to them.

We want our music video to begin firstly showing the record company followed by the artists name and title of the song on a background of some sort; either a colour or a establishing shot, to reflect the initial mood of the song or to portray how the music video is going to play out.

We then want it to fade cut to our artist (Izzie) in a long shot, from the perception of the other character in the narrative (slight over the shoulder shot), of her just walking towards the camera. We plan to film this from multiple angles during filming so that we can show it in multiple way and montage it.

The next shot is filming from the perception of our artist (Izzie) filming the other character in the narrative, walking towards her. Again we will film this from multiple angles in order to reflect camera angle variation capability.

We then want to show them both together in a montage of shots, in different places, such as a park, a party, a shopping centre, a club, ect... I feel as though this is a good way to utilise Goodwin's theory of narrative so that our visuals match our lyrics.

For example, one of the ways in which we could utilise this theory is when the lyrics say 'you drape your wrists over the steering wheel' we will get a shot of the male character driving a car, this makes the music video more realistic and matching to the song itself.

The music video we aim to produce is basically going to be a narrative featuring a couple who are in love, surrounded by friends and it is all about their happiness that they share and all the fun times they have together and they spend everyday together. It will be a montage of memories that they have with each other portrayed through a series of shots.

There will also be a running visual of the artist lip syncing the song that we can show little bits of throughout the music video, which matches the conventions of our genre and artist as Lorde frequently lip syncs in her music videos.
