Initial ideas for music video

Ideas for our Music Video song choice

As a group we had already decided on our genre of which our music video would fall under; that being Alternative.
Myself, Kate and Lucy (my group) have all carried out research into the Alternative music genre and have increased our knowledge of things such as codes and conventions which are generally seen in alternative music videos; lyrical analysis of existing indie songs; and artist representation through the mise en scene.

Narrative:

Following on from this, we gradually developed a narrative which we knew we would be able to work with as we progress into our planning of the music video.
In short, the music video will be a mixture of a narrative and the artist singing (lip syncing) alone in two different settings.
We have already asked two of our friends to act in our narrative; it would feature them as a couple. We want them to be able to fill the roles of reckless teenagers and we want their characters to act out a montage of various scenes which we can all transition together to create the narrative.

Depending on the song which we decide on as a group, we want the narrative to be along the lines of ...

* in a park smoking/drinking
* walking together, one of them struggling to work (drunk)/ but having fun
* photo booth
* house party montage
* in bed
* in a club
* at a music gig

Theoretically, I believe that we could apply Levi Strauss's theory of Binary Opposites to our narrative and explore the relationship between rebellious teens against laws and rules set by adults/elders. This would be a helpful way for us to reflect the conventions of the alternative genre as well as accurately portray an image of youth and breaking the rules. We have collectively decided on choosing a song which allows us to portray themes such as young love, rebellion and danger through our music video and the depiction and utilisation of the theory of binary Opposites will allow us to do so effectively.

Additionally, we want to attempt to utilise further theories such as Barthes' codes; we feel as if we will chose a song which we can make our narrative based around and we can link all of the scenes and images within our music video to fit the artist, genre, lyrics and conventions so that it flows well and the audience can relate to the song even more, as opposed to a narrative which lacks anything to do with the actual meaning of the song. We want to depict the meaning of the song lyrics through our music video narrative to create a sense of realism to the teenage target audience that we are aiming for so that our artist can be presented effectively and other people can relate to them.
Song/ artist:

Although we are well researched and certain of our music genre, we have decided that we would prefer it to be a female artists song as opposed to a male, and obviously she must fall into the alternative/ indie category.

Some of the alternative artists we have thought about are;
- Lana Del Rey
- Lorde
- Etta Bond
- HAIM
- London Grammar
- Tove Lo
- Yael Naim
- Bjork

We take narrative inspiration from the TV Drama 'Skins'...
