Narrative Research

Further Narrative research

When it came to researching theories of Narrative, Barthes' codes, Todorov's theory of Narrative structure and Levi Strauss' binary opposition theory were all helpful in giving me ideas in how my narrative of my music video was meant to be structured. It also allowed me to analyse existing music videos from the alternative music genre effectively.

Barthes' codes:

-Enigma codes; enigma codes feature narrative structures which have often include mysteries and reveal clues whilst making the answers gradually clearer to the audience
-Action codes; narratives which frequently include elements of actions which result in consequences in order to create suspense

-Symbolic codes; when narratives include symbolism which contrasts two different things
-Referential codes; refers to anything in a media text which refer to an external body of knowledge such as; scientific, historical, cultural knowledge

How could I use this in my music video?

I want to include an Action code within my music video where one of the characters makes a choice that leads to a negative consequence- eg: girl gets drunk-> gets ill.

Todorov's theory of Narrative structure:

Todorov argued that Narrative structure was in 5 stages which were invariant and didn't change for any narrative structure.
These 5 stages were...

2. A disruption of that order by an event
3. A recognition that the disorder has occurred
4. An attempt to repair the damage of the disruption
5. A return or restoration of a new equilibrium

How could I use this in my music video?

In my music video I think our narrative will follow the stages slightly however I don't think that a disorder has to occur in order for the narrative to be exciting.

Levi Strauss's binary oppositions theory:

Binary opposites are the contrast between two mutually exclusive concepts or things that creates conflict and drives a narrative.

For example...

  • Good VS Evil
  • Man VS Woman
  • Black VS White
  • Peace VS War
  • Humanity VS Technology
  • East VS West
  • Young VS Old
  • Domestic VS Wild

Binary opposites can be used in a music video to help the narrative
For example, in Chase and Status - End Credits, binary opposites is shown directly throughout...
such as
*old VS young
*good VS evil

This is effective as it whenever a narrative shows two opposites against each other there is a build up of tension and suspense. This is utilized deliberately in the Chase and Status music video as for the D&B/ House genre there is often a build up in the song, so the suspense makes the music drop more effective.

In my music video I plan to interpret some Binary Opposites to make it more intense and exciting, such as old VS young, criminal VS obedient, boy VS girl...

By utilising the theory of binary opposites within my music video this will enable us to create a tension within the narrative. As we want to utilise a song which doesn't necessarily have a disruption within its narrative but can still also feature tensions such as old VS young or law VS crime; it would allow us to explore two opposites whilst also representing our artist the best.
